We love watching the birds from our sun room/dining room windows! This close up of one of our feeders shows the interesting variety of textures in this space. The flaking bark of the juniper tree, with its soft but prickly "pine" needles are such a nice contrast to the softness of the bird's feathers. Here you see a female goldfinch in front (she has a paler yellow breast than some), and a siskin behind, with another one fluttering above---you can just barely make out the wing if you look very closely!
These siskins like the feeder that Kristopher & his boys made for us for Christmas. We tried to take pictures of them doing their mating dance, with necks stretched up as far as possible and beaks touching, but every time we snapped the camera, they looked like this. Oh, well, maybe they just want some privacy!
Another view of this feeder. Kristopher put "Bird's Haven" on the top with a wood burning tool. It certainly IS a haven for them! Do you see the bird on top of the workshop? It is drinking water that melted from a small bit of snow that fell earlier that day!
They also made this birdhouse for us, the one that says "Bird's Haven". Bill set these birdhouses up in a tree a little removed from the feeders, but we still have a great view from the sun room and the sewing room, too. Sometimes it takes us a long time to eat, because we are so enthralled watching our friends, the birds.
We hope some bird families will move in, after all the mating competitions and dances are over. We will keep you posted!
