Bill trimmed this big tree in our yard. (Oh, it looks soooo much better! During the next storm, we won't be worried about it damaging the workshop!) These cone/pods on the tree have been there for some time, we first noticed them last year---they are so cool-looking!
They look armor-plated! This type of cone only opens under certain conditions---usually a forest fire. This is similar to how the giant sequoia re-seeds: only after fires. Isn't it amazing that in planning and creating our Earth, Heavenly Father and Jesus provided for forests to be replanted in a natural way after fires? We love exploring and learning about the beauties of nature everywhere---even as close as our backyard!
At first, HoneyBear loved the fragrance of the cut limbs and would lay in them or next to them, as Bill spent many days cutting and disposing of them. But the sticky sap made her fur mat, and that was not fun. So, she reluctantly chose to avoid the branches in order to keep her fur in prime condition. So, that is our latest science-discovery lesson!
