Helen Keller's birthplace!

We really enjoyed our trip to Tuscumbia to tour Helen Keller's birthplace. Here you see a view of the cottage and the house, with Karl, Charla & Heather to the side of the house. Remember, in the movie "The Miracle Worker", when they drove Helen and her teacher around in a buggy for a long time so that Helen would think they were far away when they lived for a time in the cottage? This is how close it was. Since Diane had an internship years ago at the Phoenix Blind Center, and has had vision-threatening challenges herself, this visit was especially memorable. We learned a lot about how people lived in that era, for instance the kitchen was in a separate building behind the house, to prevent fires and heat being in the home in the summertime. The magnolia trees were impressive! Learning about Helen Keller and the many important causes she worked for, as well as the amazing but simple techniques that her teacher used to help her was a great experience! The little statue of the girl reading braille, that Diane is sitting next to on the bench, was extra sweet! One interesting thing was the display of china cups and saucers that survived after Helen's early tantrums! We learned that the movie was very true to the real story, and that Helen was consulted frequently during its making. Now we want to rent or buy the movie really soon!
