With our reminiscing last night about reading, and parents, we got to thinking about how reading was so important to Mema, and remained so, even in her last days. The red Advent book was from her, too. She enjoyed Bill reading to her so much as he was choosing which stories to include, with her input. And she enjoyed signing her name to the title page, saying, "Oh, they are going to love this!"

One day Kandy made Mema this visor with "Goldie" spelled out in foam stickers on it. It became Mema's reading hat a lot of the time! How fun! She enjoyed showing it to her nurses and saying that, yep, she's got to put on her glasses and her hat before she could read or sign anything! She is such a cheery person. The nurses always left happier than when they arrived. I think Bill definitely inherited that trait from her. So often in his work at the bank and now as a school bus driver, people leave happier than they arrived.

One sweet memory is how much Mema enjoyed scripture reading with us every night. When we were reading from the Book of Mormon, she would sometimes get uneasy if the chapter talked about wars, and people not being righteous. So we would end up with reading something more peaceful afterward. We discovered that the 23rd Psalm was her favorite, and she had it memorized. Without looking in her Bible, she said the words along with Bill. Later, as she became weaker, she would mouth the words along with his reading, even when we thought she was almost asleep. We miss you, Mema. Thank you for your good example. We hope there is lots to read in Heaven!
